    The Institute for Theoretical Physics was officially renamed after industrialist and major donor Fred Kavli on June 7. Declaring it the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, Chancellor Henry Yang presented the inventor with the Santa Barbara Medal, the campus's highest honor. Major participants were, from left, KITP Director David Gross, former ITP Director Walter Kohn, Fred Kavli, Chancellor Yang, and guest speaker Kip S. Thorne, a Caltech physicist.
