George P. Pernsteiner from Portland State University has been named UCSB's vice chancellor, administrative services.

An Oregon educator has been selected to be the campus's next vice chancellor for administrative services.
George P. Pernsteiner is currently vice president for finance and administration at Portland State University, a post he has held since 1995. He is expected to take up his duties at UCSB in August, pending the formal approval of UC President Richard Atkinson and the Board of Regents.
Prior to his Portland State position, Pernsteiner served as vice provost and chief financial officer at the University of Oregon, as associate vice chancellor for administration of the Oregon State System of Higher Education, and as director of administrative services for the City of Seattle.
"This appointment comes after an extensive national search, and I am very pleased that we have found such an outstanding professional to join our campus community," said Chancellor Henry T. Yang. "George has a breadth and depth of experience that is very impressive and will help us in so many ways. We are looking forward to both his service and his leadership."
As vice president for finance and administration at Portland State, Pernsteiner serves as the chief financial and administrative officer for a doctoral-granting research university with 21,000 students and a budget that exceeds $260 million. He oversees a portfolio of budget and business offices very similar to that at UCSB.
Pernsteiner also holds an appointment as a professor of higher education at Portland State and is an ex-officio member of the university foundation's Board of Directors. A 1970 graduate of Seattle University, he earned a Master of Public Administration degree at the University of Washington.
"I am very excited about this new challenge and the opportunity to work at an institution known for innovation," Pernsteiner said. "I marvel at how much UC Santa Barbara has accomplished over a relatively short period of time, and I know I will find my position there to be exhilarating and rewarding. I am looking forward to joining the impressive team Chancellor Henry Yang has assembled, and I am eager to work with the faculty, staff, and students of the university. My family and I are looking forward to becoming part of both the campus and the larger Santa Barbara community."
Pernsteiner and his wife, Tracy Phelan, have a daughter, Alexis, who recently graduated from high school and a son, Matthew, who will begin high school this fall.
Pernsteiner will succeed David Sheldon, who retired one year ago. Since then, Everett Kirkelie, associate vice chancellor for administrative services, has been acting vice chancellor.
