The remodeling of UCSB’s eastern entrance is in full swing. Begun in mid-June, the project is scheduled to complete major work on the realigned and paved entrance and exit roadway, as well as a central roundabout where three lanes converge, some time around Sept. 20.

That is when phase 2 is scheduled to end and phase 3 begin, if all goes according to plans worked out with the contractor, Granite Construction, Co. During phase 3, the bus stop on the west side of the roundabout will be completed while various curbs, sidewalks, and signs are installed, according to Project Manager Croft Yjader. Landscaping will also continue.

With Move-In Days for on-campus residence halls set for Sept. 23-24, UCSB engineers and planners hope that enough hardscape will have been completed so that, with traffic control, moving in goes smoothly.

In the meantime, Yjader says he expects to see “some tweaking” of traffic controls between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays. Transportation and Parking Services added flag people to aid traffic flow near the Parking 10 structure and the intersection of Mesa Road, Highway 217, and Lagoon Road. “That has helped a lot,” notes Yjader. But he hopes employees who feel differently will call him with their suggestions.
